Hip resurfacing

If hip pain is limiting your active life and you are younger than 60 years of age, hip resurfacing may be a good option for you. Hip resurfacing is an alternative type of hip replacement that replaces the arthritic surface of your joint but removes far less bone than traditional total hip replacement. The damaged femur head is reshaped and capped with a metal implant and the damaged hip socket in the pelvis is fitted with a metal prosthesis.

At Wayne State University Physician Group, our orthopedic surgeons may recommend hip resurfacing surgery if you:

  • Have advanced osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Are younger than age 60 and lead an active lifestyle
  • Have good bone quality
  • Are not obese
