Stem cell and bone marrow transplant

The Bone Marrow Transplant Team is a specialized group of Wayne State University Physician Group and Karmanos Cancer Institute physicians dedicated solely to evaluating and treating patients for bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplant for leukemia and lymphoma.

  • The team includes specialists in medical hematology and oncology and is actively involved in clinical research in bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplants.

Patients who benefit most from consultation with the Bone Marrow Transplant Team include:

  • Various stages of hematologic malignancies (such as some forms of acute and chronic leukemias and lymphomas
  • Thalassemias
  • Hemoglobinopathy
  • Severe combined immune deficiency
  • Congenital metabolic disorders
  • Selected solid tumor (such as brain tumor and renal cell carcinoma)
  • The team conducts transplants featuring the most technologically-advanced medical methods using all sources of stem cells: the patient’s own stem cells; allogeneic from a related donor, allogeneic from an unrelated donor and cord blood stem cell transplantation.

What we provide

  • Each patient receives personal attention from the Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplant Multidisciplinary Team’s physicians and nurse coordinators.
  • The team evaluates the patient, reviews the patient’s records, X-rays and pathology slides.
  • The team will present their recommendations to patients and family and will record the conversation for the patient to share with others who were unable to be at the appointment.

Support groups and screenings

Karmanos Cancer Institute offers the following support groups for cancer patients and their families:

  • Women Achieving Victory & Esteem is a monthly support group for female cancer patients only (any type, any stage).
  • Latina Cancer Support Group/Unidas En Victoria Contra El Cancer meets twice a month and is a support group for Spanish speaking women with cancer. Location/Sítio: Most Holy Redeemer Church, 1721 Junction St., Detroit, MI 48209.
  • Brothers Reaching & Achieving Victory & Esteem is a monthly support group for male cancer patients (any type, any stage).
