UPG Nurse Midwifery Services

UPG's certified nurse midwifery program in metro Detroit is one of the largest and oldest of its kind in the country. Having delivered more than 40,000 babies and conducted over 192,000 outpatient visits, we understand the importance of women’s health during the childbirth process and the unique needs and preferences of each patient. UPG nurse midwives provide a wide range of services and the highest level of personalized care. We partner with women and strive to provide care that meets each woman’s unique needs and expectations.

Our nurse midwives are affiliated with Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center and the Detroit Medical Center.

A 2012 survey of more than 1,000 U.S. women, developed by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), found there is a major gap between the care women expect from their health care providers and the care they receive. Although 85 percent of women said they were satisfied with their care, most said they aren’t getting the services they want, including family planning advice and counseling, pain management options during childbirth and a choice of birth settings. In addition, the study found that most women who have given birth or are pregnant haven’t talked with their providers about how to maintain health and wellness during pregnancy, breastfeeding or birth control and family planning.

Nurse midwives are Masters-prepared practitioners who possess a special understanding of women’s health and the birthing experience. For women seeking a more holistic approach to childbirth and general wellness, nurse midwives offer a highly personalized level of care.

The skills of midwives and their expert knowledge of women’s health care are often overlooked. Many people don’t realize how highly educated today’s midwives are, or think that midwives are only knowledgeable about childbearing. But providing care and guidance through pregnancy and childbirth is just part of the range of services offered by midwives. Many midwives can provide care for women of all ages—from teenage years through menopause and beyond. In fact, many women visit a midwife for women’s health needs before, during, and after pregnancy.
