Sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is any aspect of sexual response that causes you or your partner dissatisfaction or distress. Sexual problems usually do not occur as a single entity and are associated with multiple factors.

At Wayne State University Physicians Group, we take a multidisciplinary approach to sexual dysfunction by evaluating and treating the whole person or the couple. We explore the full continuum of possible causes, which may include:

Physical:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Pain with sexual intercourse
  • Premature or delayed ejaculation in men
  • Problems with sexual desire and response
  • Spasms of the vagina
  • Problems related to menopause
  • Certain medical conditions (such as diabetes and coronary heart disease)

Psychological:

  • Interpersonal problems
  • Lack of trust and open communication between partners
  • Personal psychological problems (such as depression, sexual fears or guilt, or past sexual trauma)
