Skull Base Surgery

The skull base surgery experts of Wayne State University Physician Group provide world-class medical care for patients with skull or cranial based tumors.  Skull base surgery is the surgical treatment of lesions found at the complex base of the skull. This area is rich in vital, delicate neural and vascular structures such as the cranial nerves and cerebral arteries.

Wayne State University Physician Group surgeons are at the forefront of the latest technology that offers a safe and successful means of removing formerly inoperable brain tumors. Prior to skull base surgical applications, many tumors were considered inaccessible and therefore inoperable. Our staff also works with neurosurgeons in approach of the skull base to remove lesions formerly approached only by craniotomy.

Our group provides the most comprehensive team of skull base surgery specialists in Michigan. The highly trained surgeons of WSUPG use specialized techniques and equipment to make each surgery as safe and effective as possible.

Our skull base surgeons treat patients with a variety of lesions close to the base of the skull. Both benign and malignant tumors are approached via complex paths through the nose, the ear, the face, the orbit of the eye, or the mouth by carefully removing the bone around these structures. This access allows our team to reach difficult areas of the cranium without injuring the brain, its nerves, or its blood supply.

Symptoms of skull base tumors may include loss of smell, altered taste, chronic nose bleeds, chronic headaches, loss of feeling in the face or vision loss. If you experience any of these symptoms talk with your doctor.
