Gynecologic oncology

Wayne State University Physician Group and Karmanos Cancer Center have assembled a team of gynecologic oncology experts that make its program one of the best in the nation. Team members treat cancers, including cancers of the uterus, ovaries and cervix.

The team includes national leaders who:

  • Are recognized experts in the treatment of gynecologic cancers and serve as active members of national cooperative groups
  • Rank among the nation’s “Best Doctors” and “Who’s Who in Medicine”

Conditions treated include:

  • Newly diagnosed gynecologic cancers requiring surgery, radiation and /or chemotherapy
  • Signs indicating a gynecologic malignancy such as a complex pelvic mass, malignant ascites and/or elevated CA-125
  • Vulvar, vaginal or cervical lesions suspicious for malignancy on pelvic exam
  • Patients with early cervical cancer interested in fertility-sparing surgery
  • Patients with pelvic masses and endometrial cancer interested in minimally invasive surgery
  • Recurrent gynecologic cancer patients being considered for surgery, radiation or chemotherapy
  • Patients with an interest in clinical trial participation
  • Complicated pre-invasive disease of the lower genital tract
  • Any gynecologic cancer patient with specific requests to be seen by the multidisciplinary team to initiate treatment or for a second opinion
  • Patients with and/or family history suggestive of hereditary gynecologic cancer

What our team provides

A team physician evaluates the patient, reviews all records, requests any needed additional tests and presents the case to the multidisciplinary team. After the team conference, this physician shares the team’s recommendations with the patient and family members. If other testing is required, or if other specialists need to be seen as part of the proposed therapy, those appointments are made the same day or as soon convenient for the patient.
